PRESS RELEASES

Beamo partners with KAIST AAML to digitize 200 urban regeneration projects in Korea.

The objective of this alliance is to document and prioritize major redevelopment projects in the Korean peninsula by capturing immersive digital twins.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - November 30, 2021 - 3i inc. (3i) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Advanced Applied Mechanics Laboratory of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST AAML). Using Beamo, 3i’s flagship digital twin solution, KAIST AMML plans on capturing the digital twins of more than 200 urban areas that are considered distressed or decaying. The objective is to document and prioritize major redevelopment projects in the Korean peninsula.

Beamo will be working with the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) department, established in 1982 as a prestigious division within KAIST. This department is focusing on structural engineering and materials, environmental engineering and sustainability, geotechnical engineering and geosystems, urban and architectural planning and design, and IT for construction engineering.

Pyeon (Associate Director and Associate Professor, San Jose State University), Dawon Park (Ph.D Candidate, KAIST AAML), Sun Woo Kim (M.S Student, KAIST AAML).

Urban regeneration aims to repair and reuse a city instead of erasing and rewriting it. It is a concerted approach between all involved parties with the intent of bringing meaningful and viable redevelopment projects.

For Professor Jung-Wuk Hong of KAIST CEE, these projects are focusing, not on the cities themselves, but on their residents:

“The CEE is aiming to create, with the help of Beamo, a safer living environment for residents. We plan on developing better disaster response processes and tools to respond to fire, flooding, earthquakes, water damage, heat waves, wind levels, typhoons, heavy rain, heavy snow, and other natural disasters. Risk areas can be directly annotated in the Digital Twins and shared with the relevant stakeholders.”
Jung-Wuk Hong, Professor, KAIST CEE

To drive decision-making processes, government and local stakeholders, planners, engineers, and builders first need to gather a vast array of data regarding the current state of Korean city infrastructures. Using Beamo, KAIST AAML will first mandate the capture of a defined area, like a neighborhood or a town. The area will be digitized to create a digital twin, a virtual replica of an existing location. In this case, the digital twin will take the form of a 360-degree high-fidelity street view of the area. The idea is to gather necessary data onsite or extract them directly from the image displayed in the digital twin. Ultimately, KAIST AAML will be able to launch an analysis, on a city-scale, using artificial intelligence, not only to identify dilapidated structures and hazardous areas but also to catalog visible assets and urban equipment.

For Ken Kim, CEO of 3i, this new alliance brings a groundbreaking advance for the creation of the digital city, where the Republic of Korea is driving to become the first digital nation:

“KAIST AAML will be pioneering, with Beamo, the use of AI in the field of digital twins and urban development. Groundbreaking solutions are not anymore the prerogative of smart cities. They can be deployed easily everywhere for a growing number of use cases. Smart cities can also benefit from our digital twin as they can create and access their own “Google Street View”, on demand, and plug their own applications.”
Ken Kim, CEO, 3i Inc.
